High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is called ‘high grade’ when the cells appear to be dividing quite quickly. Some types of high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma will grow faster than others. You may hear these called ‘aggressive’ lymphomas, but do not be alarmed by this – the more aggressive lymphomas are often the ones most likely to be cured.

High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas are more common in people aged over 50, but they can occur at any age, including in children. Parents and young people will also find more information in our dedicated section on lymphoma in children and young people.

High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas generally respond very well to treatment, meaning they can be cured in many cases.

Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma 

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is called ‘low grade’ when the cells appear to be dividing slowly. This means that low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma can take a long time to develop. They are also called ‘indolent’ non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Most people have advanced-stage low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma by the time they are diagnosed. Advanced-stage low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas – stage III or IV – are more difficult to cure completely. They behave in a chronic way (meaning something that lasts for a long time), sometimes being active and sometimes not.

Doctors aim to control advanced-stage low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma rather than cure it. People with low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma can often go for long periods when they feel well and don’t need treatment.

Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphomas are more common in older people and are very rare in children and young adults. (lymphomas.org.uk/)

Cause

A high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has developed from B cells. It is called ‘diffuse large B-cell lymphoma’ because when it is examined under a microscope the cancerous lymphocytes are abnormally large and they are spread diffusely throughout the biopsy specimen rather than being found in clusters. Follicular lymphoma is the commonest single type of low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is a slow-growing lymphoma that develops from B lymphocytes (B cells). It is called ‘follicular’ lymphoma because the abnormal lymphocytes often collect in lymph nodes in clumps that are known as ‘follicles’.(lymphomas.org.uk/) Important risk factors for cancer include tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and the harmful use of alcohol. Treatment
